Gyeonggi Province announces ‘Gyeonggi RE100 Vision’

Gyeonggi Province's "Gyeonggi RE100 Vision" aims to increase renewable energy production to 9 gigawatts by 2026, which is equal to the output of six nuclear power reactors. The province has pledged to employ only renewable energy in all of its public institutions. Gyeonggi Province aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% while increasing the share of renewable energy generation through this effort from 5.8% in 2021 to 30% by 2030.

At the Siheung Sihwa National Industrial Complex, Gyeonggi Province hosted a proclamation ceremony for its Gyeonggi RE100 Vision on April 24. Leading businesses including Samsung Electronics, SK, Apple, and Google are among those taking part in the global RE100 initiative, which asks members to commit to sourcing 100% of their energy needs from renewable sources in order to combat the climate issue.

Tasks In Different Sectors

In order to boost renewable energy sources, Gyeonggi Province made an announcement that it will support large-scale projects such industrial complex roof-type solar power and large-scale renewable energy integrated complexes. Additionally, it intends to distribute renewable energy to newly constructed industrial complexes that have set goals for implementing renewable energy, as well as to encourage private-public partnership in roof-type solar power generation projects on the rooftops of already-existing industrial complexes.

Gyeonggi Province intends to develop policies that link the production of renewable energy to chances for local income in order to increase resident engagement. In addition to further developing the idea of income opportunities, which includes financial rewards for actions that produce social value but are not fairly compensated in the market, the province seeks to address the issue of resident acceptance of solar power generation, which has been limited up until now. The fight against the climate problem is seen as a fundamental societal value that creates such employment prospects.

Last but not least, the government sector saw the announcement by Gyeonggi Province that it will install solar power producing equipment on the parking lots and rooftops of public institutions and switch all of their electricity use to renewable sources. Participation in energy cooperatives, profit sharing with locals, and budget cuts will all be used to carry out this plan.
